You love kids and you canít wait to start your own child care biz. Before you jump into things itís a good idea to think about exactly what you need to be a success. The checklist below will help you with that. (Donít forget to also see our Child Care Resource Guide for help on finding the information you need to get started.)

  Researched and received permits and licenses required to run a child care biz.  
Signed up for and/or taken classes on early childhood development.
  Talked to others in the child care biz for advice on how to do things right.  
Have the space needed to care for children for several hours a day.
  Have toys and games needed for children.
Have access to outdoor space for children to play in.
  Have furniture needed for a child care biz.  
Have hired and screened qualified staff to help with the biz.
  Have set up a schedule for pick-up and drop-off.  
Have set rates for child care.
  Have made sure the location is safe for children and that it meets licensing requirements.  
Have sanitary place to store food.
  Have set parental requirements. (For example, do you want only those who have been toilet trained?)  
Have developed emergency forms for parents to fill out with telephone and contact info.
  Have insurance.
