Taking photos is only one part of the freelance photography biz. There are lots of other things you need to consider as you start making a living from the photos that you take. The checklist below should help you begin. (Donít forget to also check out our Photography Resource Guide for help on finding the information you need to get started.)


   
  Have selected the area of photography I would like to focus on: commercial, retail or fine arts.  
Have taken courses to get the skills needed for my chosen photography field.
  Have interned or apprenticed to get the experience needed to be a freelance photographer.  
Have researched the cameras, film, lenses, light meters, etc. needed to take photographs in my selected area.
  Have access to or purchased cameras, film, lenses, light meters, etc. needed to take photographs in my selected area.
 
Created biz cards and flyers to promote my services.
  Have space available for taking photographs and/or processing and working with photographs I’ve shot.  
Have researched and have access to computer software and hardware that can be used with my type of photography.
  Developed contacts with magazines, newspapers, wedding and event planners, churches, art galleries and others.  
Have applied for and received licenses from the city and/or state to work as a freelance photographer.
  Have a portfolio of work that I can show to prospective clients.
